Engineered Hardwood Facts

  • Engineered hardwoods are made of several layers, or ‘plies’ that are glued together in a cross-grain construction.  This type of construction is far stronger than a single piece of solid wood; and it’s also more structurally sound – it won’t buckle, gap, cup or twist.
  • Engineered hardwoods can be installed below grade and direct to concrete, solid wood floors can not.
  • The top face is crafted from the finest Northern veneers (which is just an industry term for ‘top layer’) that provide the most uniform color and the most resistance to seasonal expansion.

Environmental Responsibility

  • These floors use half as many trees as solid wood floors
  • Faster growing, renewable wood used for inner plies
  • Mannington’s wood facility reuses its mill waste for energy
  • Mannington uses only water-based finishes that contain no VOCs
  • Mannington uses a formaldehyde free adhesive system that meets or beats the most stringent indoor air quality standards.

Prefinished flooring is available in most all wood species and stain colors. It is important to remember that wood flooring is a product of nature and no two pieces are a like. Wood flooring is not perfect and it is recommended that you purchase 5-10 % more than you need for cutting and gluing waste.

Solid hardwood flooring is a 100% natural product that responds to air humidity variations. During warm and humid summers, it is not unusual for wood to expand. During cold and dry winters, wood can contract. In order to avoid these changes from becoming noticeable and to reduce the amount of movement, relative indoor humidity level should be kept at 45-55% throughout the year.

Solid hardwood flooring should be installed on or above grade by nail or staple down installation over wooden subfloor.

Engineered Hardwood flooring is real hardwood — the word “engineered” just refers to the way in which it’s made.   There are many benefits to choosing an engineered product over a solid product.
